El Algarve es
la región más meridional de Portugal continental.
Engloba una subregión con el mismo nombre y con las mismas dimensiones, y que
corresponde también, en su totalidad, a la provincia tradicional del mismo
nombre, al distrito de Faro y a la
nueva Gran Área Metropolitana del
Algarve. Tiene una superficie de 4960 km² y una población residente de 458.734
habitantes (ine.pt 2010). Su capital es Faro.
El Algarve es la región más visitada de Portugal. Más de 9 millones de turistas
extranjeros visitan el Algarve todos los años.
«Algarve» proviene de
al-Garb (el Occidente, referido por antonomasia a garb al-Andalus ), nombre que significa
literalmente «el occidente de al-Andalus», y que correspondía con la zona más
occidental de al-Ándalus, lo que
actualmente es el sur de Portugal.
El Algarve dispone de
bellísimas playas y paisajes naturales, siendo la más turística de las provincias
portuguesas. Dos de los mayores complejos turísticos de Europa se encuentran en el Algarve: se trata de Vilamoura, junto a la playa de la Falésia (concelho de Loulé), y de la playa de Rocha en la localidad de Portim El gran reclamo turístico son las playas de
la región.
